registered voters who signed a petition. The Department of Justice sent warnings. Legal scholars called it vote buying. Elon Musk kept doing it anyway.

This is what happens when oligarchs abandon stealth for spectacle.

For forty years, American billionaires operated through what Jane Mayer called Dark Money. The Koch brothers funded think tanks. They shaped policy from the shadows. They won by being invisible. That strategy is dead. The new billionaire class wants the spotlight. They want to be seen, heard, worshipped.

Turns out this was a terrible idea.

Historian Robert Darnton documented how the French monarchy collapsed not through economic crisis but through the destruction of mystique. In the 1770s, scandalous pamphlets called libelles exposed King Louis XV’s private life in graphic detail. His sexual dysfunction. His mistresses. The private brothel he maintained called the Parc-aux-Cerfs. These texts stripped the King of his divine aura by showing him as a pathetic man enslaved by his appetites. When the Revolution came, the monarchy had already been spiritually gutted.

The contemporary billionaire has become the author of his own libelle.

Elon Musk bought Twitter and turned it into his personal conspiracy theory broadcasting network. Bill Ackman offered the world his dating wisdom: May I meet you? The phrase became a global meme. In New York City politics, being laughed at is fatal. Ackman’s Super PAC spent millions trying to defeat democratic socialist Zohran Mamdani in the mayoral race. Mamdani won anyway.

Jeff Bezos married Lauren Sánchez in a ceremony estimated at $50 million, held on a $500 million superyacht in Venice. Defenders argued the cost was relatively cheap compared to Bezos’s net worth. This defense functioned as an indictment. To someone struggling with rent, the idea that $50 million qualifies as pocket change isn’t reassuring. It’s enraging.

The intellectual cover for this behavior comes from Balaji Srinivasan’s The Network State, which proposes that digital communities should crowdfund physical territory and become sovereign entities. Governance by smart contracts. No more pesky democracy. Just the elite, finally free from the unwashed masses. Critics have a simpler description: aristocrats fleeing to Coblenz while keeping all the wealth they extracted from the society they’re abandoning.

Western law enforcement be damned.

They owned their networks and IP addresses. When one got blacklisted, they’d switch to a new one. Like changing phone numbers when the cops get too close.

BlackSprut’s hosting fees paid for everything. The marketplace grabbed about 28% of global darknet drug sales after Hydra collapsed, but it wasn’t typical. It flew banners supporting Russia’s war in Ukraine. Blockchain investigators tracked over $350,000 flowing from Aeza through Garantex, a sanctioned Russian crypto exchange known for laundering ransomware money.

Drug money from Chicago and Berlin was funding servers that hosted fake French government websites.

Doppelgänger was the real prize. The campaign created perfect clones of Le Monde, Der Spiegel, The Guardian, even official French government sites. They’d run Facebook ads that sent people through sophisticated filters. Security researchers got harmless cooking blogs. Regular French citizens landed on sites that looked exactly right, reading about how sanctions were destroying Europe or Ukrainian corruption running wild.

The scale was massive. Thousands of fake domains using cheap extensions. When France reclaimed one domain through legal channels, operators registered a new one and pointed it at the same server within minutes.

Researchers identified Aeza as the hub, the one provider willing to ignore thousands of abuse complaints.

Those April arrests should have ended it. Moscow went after Penzev, Bozoyan, and their technical director on organized crime charges. Police raided offices on Zolnaya Street, former headquarters of Wagner PMC.

Game over, right?

The infrastructure kept running. Doppelgänger actually intensified before European elections. BianLian kept hitting hospitals. The explanation seems obvious: state capture. Russian security services likely made the founders the usual offer. Work for us or prison. Their freedom became the price for nationalizing the network.

Western governments saw it. Treasury designated Aeza and its subsidiaries that July, citing ransomware, credential theft, disinformation. The UK specifically called out Aeza International for destabilizing Ukraine. Sanctions were supposed to freeze assets, cut banking, force providers to disconnect them.

What happened was corporate shell games at remarkable speed.

Within 48 hours, a new UK company called Hypercore Ltd appeared. Smart Digital Ideas registered in Belgrade. Datavice incorporated in Uzbekistan. The strategy wasn’t even subtle: jump jurisdictions, create clean companies, keep the infrastructure running underneath.

Network monitoring made it obvious. On July 20, security researchers detected massive migration. IP addresses that belonged to Aeza suddenly announced themselves as Hypercore’s. Anyone visiting sites on that network experienced zero downtime. The infrastructure just changed its nameplate.

The new company’s network connected directly to the old sanctioned one. Same servers, new corporate identity.

Everyone was reading the wrong balance sheet.

Beijing’s official government debt sits at a tidy 24% to 50% of GDP. This is the figure trotted out at every international forum. American politicians look at their own 100%+ ratio and wonder how Beijing pulled it off.

They didn’t.

They moved the borrowing off the government’s books and called it something else.

The secret lies in thousands of corporate entities called Local Government Financing Vehicles. In the early 2000s, China’s budget laws prohibited local governments from borrowing directly. So they created technically private companies that exist solely to borrow money on behalf of the state.

These corporations built highways, airports, high-speed rail lines, entire ghost cities. All financed by debt that never appeared on any government ledger.

When the IMF applies its augmented methodology (the one that captures what governments actually owe rather than what they claim), China’s public debt explodes to roughly 124% of GDP.

Functionally identical to the United States.

But it gets worse.

Because LGFV debt gets categorized as corporate in official statistics, China’s non-financial corporate debt now stands at 160% of GDP. Double the American level. This is debt that generates no profit, funds no productive enterprise, and survives only because state-owned banks are ordered to keep rolling it over.

To understand how China built this debt mountain, trace four phases.

Phase I was the 2008 response to the Global Financial Crisis. When Western export demand collapsed, Beijing unleashed a stimulus package worth 4 trillion yuan. LGFVs borrowed against rising land values to build roads, bridges, industrial parks. Anything with a ribbon to cut and a GDP number to boost.

The stimulus maintained 8%+ growth while the West stagnated. But it institutionalized a model where debt accumulation became decoupled from economic productivity.

Phase II was the shadow banking explosion of 2012 to 2016. When regulators tried to rein in formal bank lending, demand for credit remained insatiable. Banks moved the loans off their balance sheets through trust companies and securities firms.

Retail investors poured money into Wealth Management Products promising high yields, unknowingly funding risky property projects with no hope of returns.

The credit intensity of growth spiked. It now took 6 to 9 units of new credit to generate a single unit of GDP growth, up from roughly 3 during the boom years.

Phase III was Xi Jinping’s deleveraging campaign starting around 2016. Beijing recognized the ticking time bomb. The slogan houses are for living in, not for speculation signaled a genuine attempt to deflate the bubble. Regulators cracked down on shadow financing.

But the campaign collided with the US-China trade war.

With exports under pressure, Beijing couldn’t afford to let domestic credit fully contract. The form of debt shifted from shadow to formal. The total stock kept climbing.

Phase IV is where the Great Crossover crystallized.

y2="14"></line>

Let’s start with the only question that matters: Where are the trillions?

You’ve heard the claim. It echoes through rallies, across social media feeds, and from those who genuinely believe Donald Trump has somehow raked in trillions during his time in and around the presidency. It sounds plausible if you squint. After all, this is a man who slaps his name on skyscrapers, sells NFTs, hawks sneakers, and launched a social media company that briefly made him look like a tech titan. Surely all that relentless wheeling and dealing added up to something astronomical, right?

Wrong. Spectacularly, mathematically, forensically wrong.

No human being in recorded history has ever accumulated a trillion dollars in personal wealth. Not Rockefeller. Not Bezos. Not even Elon Musk, who, with a fortune hovering around $480 billion, is only projected to maybe crack the trillion-dollar mark sometime next decade.

The notion that Trump, whose businesses have cycled through bankruptcies, civil fraud judgments, and a rotating cast of furious creditors, vaulted past every billionaire on Earth by a factor of ten is not just implausible. It’s numerically absurd.

So, let’s do what apparently no one else bothered to do: follow the money. Not the mythical trillions, but the actual, verifiable billions. And, more importantly, where those billions are going.

According to Forbes, Trump’s net worth as of 2025 sits at roughly $5.1 billion. Bloomberg places it higher, around $6.4 billion, factoring in market volatility and speculative growth. These aren’t small numbers. They would, in fact, make him one of the wealthiest people in America.

Even at the peak estimate, Trump’s fortune operates three orders of magnitude below a trillion. That’s the difference between owning a nice yacht and owning the entire ocean.

And even that $6.4 billion figure is slippery.

His wealth has always been a moving target, tied to volatile assets and opaque valuations. Consider the 2024 surge: his net worth supposedly jumped to $6.5 billion, driven almost entirely by the public listing of Trump Media & Technology Group, the parent company of Truth Social.

On paper, it looked like a windfall. Trump owned roughly 65% of TMTG stock. But this wasn’t cash in the bank. It was illiquid stock in a politically radioactive company that he couldn’t legally sell until September 2024.

And when the lockup period ended?

The stock collapsed. Between its March peak and August, TMTG lost over 65% of its value. Trump’s estimated net worth plummeted to $4.3 billion in a matter of months.

This is the recurring theme of Trump’s financial life: paper wealth that evaporates under scrutiny, assets that look impressive until you check the fine print, and a net worth that swings wildly depending on who’s doing the math and when.

Forget the speculation for a moment. Let’s talk about the part that isn’t in dispute: the fraud.

Beijing didn’t crack some ancient code of authoritarian efficiency.

America’s chief geopolitical rival gained a generational advantage because Washington simply walked off the field.

Between 2017 and 2021, the Trump administration actively dismantled the architecture that made American power durable, handing China opportunities so golden that even Chinese nationalists struggled to believe their luck. Some began calling Trump Chuan Jianguo, literally Trump the Nation-Builder.

The nation they meant was China.

History offers a graveyard of catastrophic autocratic thinking. Mao’s Great Leap Forward killed tens of millions through famine. The Soviet Union’s rigid five-year plans ended in economic collapse. China’s own one-child policy now leaves the country facing demographic catastrophe, with plunging birth rates that arrived too late to fix.

Autocracies lack feedback mechanisms. Leaders double down on disasters because admitting error would shatter the myth of infallibility.

Democracies possess the self-corrective advantage. Elections can change leaders. Free press can expose failures. Institutions can pump the brakes.

Theory met reality during Trump’s tenure. Reality won ugly.

Trump seemed actively hostile to the entire concept of American global leadership.

Threatened to abandon NATO. Withdrew from the Trans-Pacific Partnership within days of taking office. Pulled out of the Paris Climate Accords. Attacked allies while praising dictators.

The TPP withdrawal alone constituted strategic malpractice. It gave China a major advantage in Asia, allowing Beijing to write the rules for trade across the region. The void accelerated the Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership, a China-centric trade framework that will reorient East Asian economies away from the US for decades.

Consider the 2025 Munich Security Conference. A US vice president bashed European allies while China’s foreign minister laid out a vision for multilateralism and cooperation.

Beijing didn’t have to be competent.
<div class="digest-post-embed" data-attrs="{"nodeId":"e901f3cb-72bc-4c2d-9f91-824761ce4847","caption":"China grew 5.3% in the first half of the year. by a third, halve prices, and triple output. They’d laugh you out of the room. That’s the national pitch right now: fewer immigrants, cheaper goods, a homegrown manufacturing surge.

You don’t need a PhD. You need a calculator.

Pick any two. Trying for all three buys volatility.

Start with the day-one lesson. Shrink the supply of workers and wages rise. Firms fight over a smaller pool, labor costs climb, final prices follow. Pillar one knocks out pillar two before you even get moving.

Now layer in the manufacturing promise. Factories don’t assemble themselves. You need electricians, welders, equipment operators, foremen, and crews to pour concrete before any line ever turns. You cannot build a factory without a workforce.

Protectionism tightens the bind. Tariffs get sold as a patriotic fee foreigners pay. In practice they act like a sales tax on American buyers. Put a levy on steel and every automaker, appliance maker, and construction firm takes higher costs. They swallow margin or pass it through. There isn’t a third path.

The revenue cheerleading misses the scale. A few billion in duties can’t offset economy-wide pass-throughs that touch every bill of materials. The deeper issue isn’t a one-off hit. Reshoring swaps efficient global supply lines for higher-cost domestic ones. That’s a structural choice, not a weekend sale price. Globalization kept a lid on prices for decades. Unwinding it plants a steady inflation pulse that won’t fade on its own.

All of this sticks the Fed in a bad seat. The mandate is price stability. Immigration caps push wage inflation. Tariffs and reshoring push input inflation. To chase a two percent target, policy stays tighter for longer.

Tighter policy raises the hurdle for the very investments politicians claim to want. New fabs, battery plants, tool-and-die shops, the subcontractor network that makes big capex worth it. Higher borrowing costs slow groundbreakings. Slower growth cools demand for what those plants would sell.

Now the invoice is brutal.

For two decades, Berlin sold the machines, the chemicals, the premium badges. Profits looked effortless. Beijing studied the playbook and then rewrote the game.

What you're watching is a targeted hit on the German model itself. Call it China Shock 2.0.

Forget the fairy tales about a cyclical dip. The data already mapped the turn. At the top in 2021-2022, Germany's commerce with China ran above 5 percent of GDP. The United States never got close to that kind of exposure.

When the lines roll over after 2022, that's the moment China starts substituting German inputs at home and flooding third markets with its own output. The era of German exceptionalism ended right there.

<picture></picture>

<g>

</g><polyline points="15 3 21 3 21 9"></polyline><polyline points="9 21 3 21 3 15"></polyline><line x1="21" x2="14" y1="3" y2="10"></line><line x1="3" x2="10" y1="21" y2="14"></line>

Germany’s exposure to China peaked above 5% of GDP in 2021–2022 — move production back to the US.

And wouldn’t you know it, the president just happens to own $1M+ worth of stock in Apple and Nvidia, two companies he has given preferential trade treatment.

What are the odds.

This isn’t some abstract policy debate anymore. The president’s latest financial disclosure lays out significant investments in a sector where he has exerted unprecedented influence.

August 6th rolls around, Tim Cook shows up at the White House with a gold-plated plaque and a $100B manufacturing promise… and suddenly Apple gets its Get Out of Tariff Free card.

The same day.

Nvidia’s Jensen Huang gets his audience too. Both companies walk away with exemptions from semiconductor tariffs that would’ve crushed their margins. Both happen to be in Trump’s portfolio.

The looming threat of tariffs on semiconductors will cause the price of hundreds of items to increase — everything from alarm clocks to baby monitors, fitness trackers to smart TVs.

But not iPhones. Not RTX 4090s.

Those get the presidential blessing because their manufacturers promised to build more stuff domestically.

Right.

Every other tech company scrambling to avoid 100% tariffs on chips can’t exactly walk into the Oval Office with a CEO photo-op and a pledge written in gold leaf. The exemption criteria appear remarkably specific: be large enough to matter, commit to U.S. manufacturing, and ideally be held in the president’s trust fund.

Business leaders have pledged at least $1.6T in US spending since Trump was elected to a second term. If history is any guide, not all of it will materialize.

But the exemptions are immediate. The investments? Those can be renegotiated later, when the cameras are off.

Somebody pays the tariffs — ultimately consumers through higher prices.

– Fed Chair Jerome Powell

What’s happening in America today goes far beyond traditional authoritarianism.

The comfortable myth that America is merely flirting with authoritarianism deserves a swift burial. What’s unfolding isn’t some temporary democratic hiccup or garden-variety strongman politics. We’re witnessing the birth of something far more sinister: a digital-age totalitarian state that would make George Orwell update his dystopian playbook.

The distinction between authoritarianism and totalitarianism isn’t academic hairsplitting anymore. It’s the difference between a broken democracy and no democracy at all.

Traditional authoritarians are content to control the political realm while leaving civil society relatively untouched. Think Pinochet’s Chile or Franco’s Spain. Brutal and repressive, yes, but ultimately limited in scope. They rule through fear and apathy, demanding little beyond compliance.

Totalitarianism is an entirely different beast. It makes a total claim on society itself, systematically erasing every boundary between public and private life until nothing exists outside the regime’s reach. It doesn’t want your passive obedience; it demands your active participation, your enthusiasm, your soul.

And that’s precisely the trajectory America has locked onto in 2025.

The evidence isn’t hiding in classified documents or whispered rumors. It’s happening in broad daylight with stunning audacity.

Trump’s regime has moved far beyond conventional political overreach to insert itself into every corner of American life. Private universities now face federal curriculum mandates. The Naval Academy gets its reading lists vetted by political commissars. The Smithsonian Institution, independent for 178 years, suddenly finds its exhibits subject to regime approval.

Retail businesses receive presidential pricing directives. Even basic geography bends to political will. Witness the absurd rechristening of the Gulf of America.

This isn’t the chaotic flailing of an incompetent administration. It’s the methodical dismantling of civil society’s independence, executed with the precision of a hostile takeover.

The technological dimension makes this iteration uniquely terrifying. While 20th-century totalitarians had to rely on networks of informants and crude surveillance apparatus, today’s aspiring dictators have Silicon Valley oligarchs building their digital panopticon.

Palantir’s integration of government databases creates surveillance capabilities that would make East Germany’s Stasi look like amateur hour. Peter Thiel and Elon Musk aren’t just manipulating markets and information flows. They’re constructing the infrastructure for total social control.

Social media platforms function as the new Ministry of Truth, systematically driving out genuine information through what amounts to an informational Gresham’s Law. Disinformation, mythology, and mindless distraction crowd out facts with algorithmic efficiency.

The result is a population that, as Hannah Arendt observed decades ago, would at the same time believe everything and nothing, think that everything was possible and that nothing was true.

This explains the otherwise inexplicable phenomenon of Trump simultaneously taking credit for developing COVID vaccines while encouraging vaccine rejection among his followers. The contradiction isn’t a political miscalculation. It’s a demonstration of power.

Totalitarian propaganda succeeds precisely because it proves the leader’s ability to define reality itself, regardless of observable facts. When your followers will believe two contradictory things simultaneously, you’ve achieved something far more valuable than mere political support: you’ve captured their capacity for independent thought.

America’s structural vulnerabilities mirror those of early 20th-century Germany with disturbing precision. Both societies combined world-leading technological advancement with vast backward regions trapped in pre-modern conditions.

Today’s United States leads in digital innovation and hosts the world’s finest universities, yet vast swaths of the interior resemble developing nations more than advanced democracies. Rural infrastructure continues its decades-long decay despite increased federal spending. Educational disparities between urban and rural communities grow wider each year, creating distinct populations with fundamentally different relationships to reality itself.

No developed democracy harbors anything approaching America’s population of religious fundamentalists. Believers in angels, demons, miracles, and prophecies, all wrapped in determined provincialism. Their worldview more closely resembles populations in Iran or Nigeria than citizens of modern European democracies.

This mystical orientation toward reality, enriching generations of televangelists, renders vast numbers of Americans uniquely susceptible to fantastic promises and relentless demonization.

They don’t believe in observable facts because they’ve been trained not to. They believe in whatever narrative provides consistency and meaning, regardless of its relationship to empirical reality.

As Arendt noted about supporters of earlier totalitarian systems, they trust not their eyes and ears but their imaginations, which can be captured by anything that appears universal and internally consistent.

This constituency doesn’t need to represent a majority to dominate politically. History shows that thirty to forty percent of true believers, possessed of what Yeats called passionate intensity, can overwhelm a divided and apathetic majority.

Their dogmatic persistence allows them to set the political tone for entire societies while the best lack all conviction.

The institutional framework enabling this transformation was decades in the making. America operates under a Constitution designed for a pre-industrial society, featuring anachronisms like the Electoral College. A mechanism unheard of anywhere else since the dissolution of the Holy Roman Empire in 1806.

Combined with grotesque gerrymandering inherited from 18th-century England’s rotten boroughs and a Senate that privileges empty land over actual people, these structural features create systematic advantages for rural minorities that mirror the Prussian junker class’s domination of imperial Germany.

Wealthy malefactors exploit these vulnerabilities to block any reforms that might address legitimate grievances through democratic means. The result is a population increasingly desperate for radical solutions, whether revolutionary or totalitarian.

The intellectual groundwork for this transformation was laid methodically over four decades by religious fundamentalists and white supremacists, just as failed German intellectuals like Paul de Lagarde and Julius Langbehn spent fifty years preparing the ideological soil for Nazism.

This hybrid fundamentalist Christianity and militant Americanism offers a comprehensive worldview that not only explains societal decay but prescribes authoritarian revival as the only solution.

America’s true Rubicon moment came with the normalization of torture during the Bush administration’s enhanced interrogation programs. Despite zero evidence of effectiveness, nearly two-thirds of Americans supported barbaric practices condemned since the Enlightenment and proscribed in the Constitution itself.

Trump’s recent request for the Supreme Court to void anti-torture treaties suggests this bloodlust enjoys continued popular support.

The emergence of little Trumps throughout the system perfectly mirrors Hitler’s network of local enforcers who anticipated the Führer’s will without direct orders. Virginia school districts ban Romeo and Juliet alongside Orwell’s 1984. University administrators hire private security contractors to spy on students.

Local mayors proudly proclaim their communities’ willingness to suffer economically for Trump’s vision, essentially declaring their own constituents too stupid to understand their material interests.

This represents a fundamental regression from the modern nation-state to personal rule. The autocrat effectively owns everything within his territory and ordinary citizens become subjects rather than participants in governance.

Unlike historical feudalism, however, today’s strongmen feel no obligations toward their subjects. Only the right to command them. It’s warlordism in expensive suits, feudalism without even the pretense of noblesse oblige.

Elite capitulation has been breathtakingly swift and morally revolting. From prestigious law firms to Ivy League universities to billion-dollar corporations directly harmed by Trump’s tariffs, institutional leaders have chosen collaboration over resistance even when opposition seemed both more rational and more effective.

They’ve calculated, perhaps correctly, that submission offers better survival odds than principled defiance.

But the real battle won’t be decided in corporate boardrooms or university administrations. It will be fought at the mass level, where 77 million Americans actively chose this path despite witnessing Trump’s first term.

The recent acceleration from death threats to actual political assassinations tells the story. Including the murder of a Minnesota state representative and attempted killing of a state senator in targeted political attacks. This signals the next phase of transformation.

The reassuring fiction that Trump supporters are simply misguided patriots needs to die along with democracy itself. What lies at the core of his movement is a not-insignificant fraction of would-be totalitarians who possess the same mentality as those who lynched Black Americans during Jim Crow, mobbed Jewish families during Kristallnacht, and beheaded intellectuals during Mao’s Cultural Revolution.

They’re not confused about their values. They’re expressing them.

Resistance exists but remains inadequate to the threat’s scale. Protests emerge sporadically. Some young Americans demonstrate genuine commitment to pluralistic values. Local civic engagement continues in pockets. But these scattered efforts pale against a coordinated assault on democratic institutions backed by unlimited resources and systemic advantages.

America’s crisis of modernization, its chaotic transition from industrial to digital society, has created conditions strikingly similar to those that produced 20th-century totalitarian movements. The atomization of traditional communities, wildly uneven technological development, and collapse of meaning-making institutions have left millions vulnerable to authoritarian appeals that promise simple solutions to complex problems.

The question isn’t whether America can slide into totalitarianism anymore. That process is already well advanced.

The question is whether enough Americans will recognize what’s happening and resist before the transformation becomes irreversible. History offers little encouragement: once totalitarian systems achieve full institutional capture, they prove remarkably resistant to internal reform or revolution.

The comfortable middle ground between democracy and dictatorship is disappearing faster than most people want to acknowledge. Americans face an increasingly binary choice between total resistance and total submission.

Those who imagine they can remain neutral in this struggle will likely discover that totalitarian regimes don’t recognize neutrality. Only compliance and defiance.

The hour is later than almost anyone wants to admit, and the enemy isn’t at the gates anymore. He’s already inside, systematically dismantling the institutions and norms that once protected American democracy. What happens next depends entirely on whether ordinary Americans can summon the courage to name what they’re witnessing and act accordingly.

The window for effective resistance remains open, but it’s closing with mechanical precision.

History will judge harshly those who had the opportunity to act but chose comfort over courage, normalcy bias over clear-eyed assessment of existential threats. The time for illusions is over. What remains is the hard, urgent work of opposition.

Before opposition itself becomes impossible.

This Substack is reader-supported.
