Yevgeny Prigozhin, the leader of the Wagner mercenary group, made a startling declaration on Saturday, revealing his presence inside the army headquarters in Rostov-on-Don, a city located in southern Russia. According to Prigozhin, his fighters have successfully gained control over various military sites within the city.

Prigozhin had previously announced that his forces had crossed the border from Ukraine into Russia, expressing his determination to overthrow the country's military leadership. He emphasized that he and his thousands of fighters were prepared to make the ultimate sacrifice.

Rostov-on-Don serves as a crucial logistical base for Russia's offensive operations in Ukraine. The city's military headquarters play a pivotal role in coordinating these activities.

In a video shared on Telegram, Prigozhin confirmed his location within the army headquarters, stating that it was 7:30 am local time. He also asserted that the military sites in Rostov, including an aerodrome, were under their control. Remarkably, he mentioned that the planes engaged in the Ukraine offensive were departing from the airfield without any disruption.

Prigozhin justified their control over the aerodrome, explaining that it ensured the attack aviation would target the Ukrainians and not his forces. He encouraged the Russian populace to question the information broadcasted on state television, suggesting that a significant amount of territory had been lost and that the casualty count exceeded the officially reported figures.

Local authorities in Rostov-on-Don issued a plea for residents to remain indoors, prioritizing their safety amidst the escalating situation.

Meanwhile, the Russian authorities initiated a criminal case against Prigozhin, accusing him of instigating an "armed rebellion." The video released from Rostov showed Prigozhin claiming that the Chief of General Staff, Valery Gerasimov, had fled the building upon learning of their approach. He expressed his intent to overthrow Gerasimov and Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu.

A Telegram channel affiliated with Wagner published an additional video featuring Prigozhin engaging in conversation with two army officials at the Rostov headquarters. Holding a rifle on his lap and donning a cap adorned with the Russian flag, Prigozhin stated that their mission was to capture Gerasimov and Shoigu. He assured the military officials that his mercenaries would not interfere with their command over troops and criticized the orders issued in Ukraine, which he believed led to significant losses.

Prigozhin proclaimed their purpose was to put an end to the perceived disgrace plaguing their homeland, asserting that they were ultimately saving Russia. The situation remains tense as they maintain their presence in Rostov and express their intention to advance further to Moscow, while effectively blockading the city.

In response to these developments, Russia has implemented an "anti-terrorist operation regime" in Moscow and the Moscow region. The national anti-terrorist committee stated that this measure aims to prevent potential terrorist acts within the designated areas. Similarly, the southern Voronezh region has also been subject to an anti-terrorist operation, as reports suggested that Wagner mercenaries were making their way there.

Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin emphasized that these measures aim to bolster security. He further mentioned increased scrutiny on roads and potential limitations on mass gatherings in the capital. Sobyanin appealed to the residents of Moscow for their understanding and cooperation during this period.

The city's transport department cautioned about possible delays in bus routes traveling towards southern destinations from the capital. As the situation unfolds, the authorities remain vigilant, and the public is urged to remain informed and exercise caution.
